INTERPRETATION MODE

Whispered Interpretation

Chuchotage

Real-time whispered interpretation for 1-2 listeners. No equipment. No booths. No disruption. The interpreter sits beside the listener and whispers the translation as the speaker talks.

What Is Whispered Interpretation?

Whispered interpretation — known as chuchotage (from the French "chuchoter," to whisper) — is a form of simultaneous interpretation delivered directly to 1-2 listeners without any equipment. The interpreter sits or stands beside the listener and whispers the real-time translation.

It is the most discreet form of interpretation. No booths, no receivers, no headsets — just an interpreter who blends into the setting while ensuring the listener understands everything being said.

This mode is ideal for executive settings where visible interpretation equipment would be inappropriate or disruptive. Board meetings, diplomatic side-conversations, VIP tours, and private consultations are its natural habitat.

When to Use Whispered Interpretation

Board Meetings

When one or two board members need interpretation without disrupting the flow of the meeting.

Executive Briefings

C-suite meetings, investor presentations, and strategy sessions where discretion is paramount.

VIP Tours

Facility tours, site visits, and state visits where the VIP needs real-time interpretation while walking.

Diplomatic Conversations

Side conversations at diplomatic events, state dinners, and reception settings.

Private Consultations

Legal, medical, or financial consultations where only 1-2 people need interpretation.

Working Dinners

Business dinners and social events where an interpreter facilitates cross-language conversation.

Limitations to Be Aware Of

Maximum 2 Listeners

Whispering cannot carry beyond 2 people. For groups of 3 or more, you need a tour guide system or full simultaneous interpretation with booths and receivers.

Noise Sensitivity

Whispered interpretation works best in controlled environments. Noisy venues, outdoor settings, and large banquet halls can make whispering difficult to hear.

Duration Fatigue

Whispering for extended periods strains the interpreter's voice. For sessions over 2 hours, we recommend a relay team or switching to equipment-based simultaneous interpretation.

The Discretion Factor

In executive and diplomatic settings, the presence of interpretation equipment sends a signal. Booths and headsets announce to the room that someone doesn't speak the language — which can shift power dynamics in negotiations.

Whispered interpretation eliminates this. The interpreter is perceived as an aide or assistant. There are no cables, no receivers, no visible technology. The interpretation happens invisibly, preserving the listener's position in the room.
